In 1937, a teenager named William Alexander Wright built a small log hunting cabin in the woods on his family's property in Sanilac Township. This same young man eventually joined the U.S. Navy Air Corps and distinguished himself as a pilot through World War II, in the Philippines, and during the Korean conflict. By the end of a naval career spanning more than twenty years, he had attained the rank of lieutenant commander and was a recipient of multiple military awards including six air medals and the Navy Cross.
More than seventy years later, you will be able to stand in Bill Wright's hunting cabin on the grounds of the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum. This little cabin, the last of its kind in the county, was moved to the historic village in 2007 after its most recent owners, Barb & John Haman, donated it to the museum. Museum volunteers - Cathi Bulone Campbell and her husband, Bryan - have been spearheading the drive to raise funds to refurbish the cabin and turn it into the Sanilac County Hunting & Fishing Cabin Museum - a repository for the county's hunting, trapping, and sports-fishing history and memorabilia.
At this point, the cabin has been relocated, the interior has been cleared, flooring is being rejuvenated, and the roof is being replaced with new red shingles. Very soon, the building will be rewired and hooked in to the electrical system on the museum grounds. There's a lot to do and the fundraising continues. Every raffle ticket and snow cone purchased during museum events helps. On this particular venture, we don't do a thing unless we can pay cash to do it.
