Sanilac County Historical Museum

Dairy Museum

Huckins schoolThe dairy industry was for many years, and still is very important to Sanilac County.  Here at our dairy museum we have examples of different types of separators used to extract cream.  There are some early milking machines and some inventions for keeping milk cold.  We have various types of churners used to make butter from cream and other devices that were used to firm up the butter and extract the remaining moisture.  We even have a dog-powered treadmill that was used to power one type of butter churn.

Many items used on the farm and in the kitchen are on display.  There are milk bottles and containers, straining utensils and a home pasteurizing unit.
